Students at Bernice Young Elementary School in Tontitown received a hands-on lesson in electrical safety when Ozarks Electric Cooperative participated in the school's STEAM Day event.
Designed for kindergarten through fifth-grade students, the event focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics through engaging, interactive activities. Ozarks Electric brought a specialized electrical safety demonstration model that allowed students to see how everyday activities can become dangerous when conducted too close to power lines.
The model, which represents a small city, featured miniature scenes of people performing common tasks such as rescuing a cat from a tree, backing a sailboat out of a driveway, and cleaning a swimming pool. Students operated levers that moved the figurines around the model city. When a figurine came into contact with a power line, the demonstration produced a loud electrical arc, helping students understand the serious consequences of unsafe behavior around electricity.
The interactive exhibit sparked curiosity and encouraged students to think critically about the hazards that can exist in their own neighborhoods and backyards. Ozarks Electric representatives explained how to recognize potential dangers and shared practical safety tips to help students avoid accidents involving power lines and electrical equipment.
In addition to the demonstration, students had the opportunity to see and try on some of the personal protective equipment used by Ozarks Electric lineworkers. The experience gave students a closer look at the important work lineworkers perform each day and the specialized gear they use to stay safe while maintaining the electric system.
Ozarks Electric is committed to educating the communities it serves about electrical safety. By participating in events like STEAM Day, the cooperative helps equip young people with knowledge that can prevent injuries and promote safe decision-making for years to come.
