Ozarks Electric Hosts Safety Training for Proper Chainsaw Use, Aggressive Dogs

Posted by

Ozarks Electric Cooperative recently hosted a comprehensive, hands-on safety training focused on two real-world hazards that lineworkers increasingly encounter in the field: aggressive dogs and hazardous tree or pole conditions. The sessions were designed to strengthen situational awareness, reinforce safe response procedures, and give crews practical experience in managing high-stress scenarios such as an aggressive or uncontrollable dog.

The first portion of the training centered on dog behavior and personal safety. A specialized instructor, who works professionally with protection and service animals, led an in-depth session on recognizing warning signs of canine aggression, understanding an owner’s role and potential reactions, and knowing the legal rights and responsibilities lineworkers have when entering a property with a threatening animal present. To provide a realistic learning experience, the instructor brought a highly trained working dog to demonstrate specific behaviors and response techniques.

Following the classroom portion, lineworkers participated in a controlled exercise where each person held a bite pad while the instructor’s dog engaged the pad with full force. During this exercise, the crew was required to recite key procedural information, even as the dog pulled, shook, and tore at the pad. This challenge was designed to simulate the stress and adrenaline of an unexpected dog attack while reinforcing the importance of maintaining a calm, focused mind in an unsafe situation. The result was a memorable and valuable training moment that gave employees both confidence and clarity about how to react safely in the field.

The second portion of the training shifted to chainsaw safety, focusing on safe cutting techniques for utility poles and dead or damaged trees. Instructors demonstrated how to evaluate a variety of hazardous conditions, such as a pole leaning under tension, a dead tree standing upright, or a trunk lying on its side, and choose the appropriate cutting method to mitigate risk. Lineworkers practiced identifying pressure points, understanding the behavior of wood under load, and selecting safe cutting angles to prevent unpredictable movement. This instruction is essential for ensuring that crews can work efficiently while protecting themselves and their teammates in the field.

By investing in realistic, skills-based training experiences, Ozarks Electric Cooperative continues its commitment to safety, preparedness, and supporting the hardworking employees who keep power flowing to our communities every day.
